Which SUV Is Better? 2019 Buick Enclave vs. 2019 Ford Explorer

Few automotive segments are as crowded right now as the midsize SUV, especially where American car manufacturers are concerned. While the 2019 Buick Enclave and the 2019 Ford Explorer might appear on opposite ends of that segment, they are still a comparison that many car buyers decide to make.

If you also find yourself trying to weigh these two models against one another, but you aren’t sure which one belongs in your driveway, don’t worry. We’ve laid out the most relevant selling points of these two models so you can make an easy comparison.

Comparing the 2019 Buick Enclave and the 2019 Ford Explorer

Performance

If performance and fuel economy matter to you, the Buick Enclave will wrap this up quickly. Its 3.6L V6 engine puts out 310 horsepower compared to the Explorer’s standard 3.5L Ti-VCT that only makes 290 horsepower. With the help of a 9-speed automatic transmission, the Enclave also rates an EPA-estimated 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The Ford only manages 17 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway.

The Explorer has other engine options that improve on its base performance numbers, but they’ll cost you extra.

To further reduce fuel consumption, the Enclave also features Stop/Start technology for greater efficiency in stop-and-go traffic.

Interior Capacity and Design

Both of these models offer seating for up to 7 occupants, but if you’re measuring for cargo volume, they’re far from equivalent. The trunk space behind the third row in each car is comparable, with the Enclave delivering 23.6 cu. ft. compared to 21 cu. ft. in the Explorer. The gap widens with the third seat folded flat, though. Buick gives you 58 cu. ft. behind the second row — the Ford model only offers 43.9 cu. ft.

It’s a challenge for the Explorer to match the Enclave’s interior ambiance, too. The most expensive Explorer Platinum trim level offers a number of refinements, but Buick owners already know to expect warm wood tones and leather-appointed seats. The Enclave also comes with QuietTurning™ technology, including triple-sealed doors, laminated glass, and other refinements for a serene experience on the road.

Safety

For arguably the most important facet of any car, Buick gives you a better deal on safety features, too. The Enclave is available with Surround Vision for a virtual bird’s eye view of your car. Buick also offers a number of systems designed to keep you out of harm’s way, including Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking, Forward Collision Alert, and Front Pedestrian Braking. And OnStar® is there for you if anything does happen.

By contrast, Ford offers forward collision warning in an options package, but it lacks the more advanced functionality of what Buick provides. The Explorer’s exterior camera also doesn’t provide as much vision.
